Assignment Intro to Public Relations, "How to write a biography" 10 Marks
You are the PR director for WJM-TV and are assigned to write a bio on the station’s popular Chuckles the Clown for the station’s website. The station manager says that it’s OK to reveal Chuckles’ “real identity.”
Here are some key facts:
1. Chuckles’ real name is George Bowerchuck. He’s 63 and a former light-heavyweight boxing contender.
2. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey.
3. He joined WJM 10 years ago as a newscaster for WJM’s Live at Five. Later, he worked as a weather reporter, and became Chuckles the Clown five years ago.
4. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
5. His wife’s name is Louise, and they have four children.
6. He was educated at Harvard University, where he received a BA in philosophy and graduated with honors.
7. He has been voted “clown of the year” for three years in a row by the readers of Clown Weekly magazine.
8. His hobbies include collecting tropical fish, snorkeling, and finger-painting.
Write:
1. A 100-word biography to be posted on the WJM website. Follow the bio guidelines we discussed in class; also consider how it should read in the context of this case study.
2. A 25- to 30-word biographical “blurb" for brochures when George (aka Chuckles) speaks at special events.
3. Provide an appropriate identifying title on each (your name plus qualifiers, like “Web bio” and “Event bio,” should do it). Indicate a word count in parentheses at the end of each bio.
4. Write the assignment in “block format” – just like these assignment specs. Short paragraphs, no indents, and an extra space between each paragraph – as you see here.
This assignment will be marked for structure, style, mechanics, content, spelling, and your ability to follow these instructions.
